Dynamic Capabilities

Today, I read a aticle is about supply chain management. The author mentioned a concept "Dynamic Capabilities." He defined it "the organization and strategic routines by which firms achieve new resource configuration as markets emerge, collide, split, evolve, and die." The key word that I want to discuss is "resource." In the class, we have read that Peter Drucker mentioned the relationship between innovation and resource. In my opinion, the resource in SCM and Innovation management is the same thing. Mr. Drucker thought nothing is called "resource" until people know that is useful and have economic value. In this paper, the author said the market is dynamic and the future is hard to predict. "The dynamic capabilities focus on generating new situation-specific knowledge than relying on existing knowlwdge," the author said. I think the "situation-specific knowledge" is talking the same story of Drucker's "resource." It means the future is hard to predict, so we have to find resouce that can fit "NOW." If we did it, we are doing "Innovation."

Motorola, innovation?

A few yeas ago, Moto was the second biggest cell phone company in the world. But in recent years, it became not quite good. I think that is because Motorola's products (cell phone) are lack of innovation. Most of my friends said Motorola's cell phones are too old school and ugly. Young people like to use Sony Ericson and Nokia's mobile because they are fashion and good-looking. Some of other customers care about the price not the outlook. Motolora can't win those people, either. Because of Korean brands.

Profit!!

Recently, GE focused on the business about environmental issues and global warming issues. GE's chief, Jeffrey Immelt is an environmentalist. But he said "profit is motivator in push for clean technology." I think it is same as innovation management. Find where the money is, and try to do the differentiation. Mr. Immelt also mentioned that all decisions he made are for GE's investors. He believed that he could generate earnings for GE's investors through technology. And it is kind of "product innovation."

Web 2.0

According to the Information Management Conference that I attended last saturday. The speaker defined web 2.o as "everyone who has visited the web page provided their knowlwdge, and each person can interact with the other one." The speaker mentioned Web 2.0 is an innovative business model. Web 2.0 is an attitude, not a technology. Web 2.0 is based on a concept "community." More people in one community, the web page will be more powerful. We can conclude the information into one sentence "Web 2.0 is the power of us."

Technology and Management

In my opinion, innovation can divided into two ways. One is put a old thing in a new way. That includes process, product, service....etc. The other kind of innovation could be an invention. To invent something that is useful. According to the presentation that my friends presented this tuesday. I concluded a simple idea that is "how the technology used is important." But in this sentence, "How" means how to manage. We have the latest technology and information system, but how we're going to use them appropriately is really a big concern.

Evaluation

All managing skills have to do the evaluation.
So does innovation management.
But the environment is always changing.
In my opinion, it's impossible to follow any fixed rules to evaluate innovation.
However, we still need to try and make the rules more general and flexible.
Does the manager keep following the path that fit the original "Company Goal"?
It might be the easiest and obvious way to evaluate the company's innovation.

MIT

Made in Taiwan?
No.....It stands for managing innovation and technology.
In every book I have read, always talks about strategy and what the difference between invention and innonotion.
We can call invention is a kind of innovation, but most innovations are not just to invent something.
The company got to have some strategies to make money.
The strategies could be invention, improving or just put the right way in the right place.
Even if there might be only a little bit change, the company made money.
Then I call it is a strategy for managing innovation.
